Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My eighth-grade cluster is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. My students continue to work hard each year and thrive in a learning environment that nurtures creativity.
Over 25% of the students in my cluster are classified as ELL and over 60% over the families do not recognize English as their primary language, but even with these hurdles my kids work hard to find success in the classroom.
Additionally, over 80% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. This means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted. I have a large population of students that speak other languages including Portuguese and Spanish. Many of my students have only been in the country for a few years and continue to struggle with learning to speak and understand English.
My Project
My students were lucky enough to get a comb binder last year. Together we create math journals that they could use as a resource throughout each unit. This helps them to keep all of their papers together and allows them to use their own creativity to make a resource that works for them.
Keeping the work together in one book helps all students, but especially my students identified with Special Education needs and my English Language Learners.
While doing these books we discovered two problems. First, we need bigger combs and second, they need a sturdier cover. This project is for a variety of different size binder combs, so we can make sure we have the right size for the project we are creating. The cardstock paper not only helps the students protect their book, but also allows them to personalize it and make the books their own from day one.
