Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class are persistent and love reading in both English and Spanish. We are a dual language school! These children come from a low socioeconomic area surrounded by gangs and violence. In their short little lifetime, many have witnessed things that no one should ever witness or have heard of all the negative things that occur in their neighborhood. We are also considered a "transition" school which means students always come and go, and come again. Many of my students' parents work two or even three jobs just to provide for their families which effects the educational reinforcement at home. Even though they are in a rough neighborhood or have been exposed to trauma, I am proud to say that my students are excelling in all academic areas except in reading and vocabulary. Many lack the ability to decode and/or comprehend stories being read aloud to them.
My Project
In my second grade bilingual classroom, we have a huge range of reading levels! I do have classroom books; however, they are not all bilingual. Some books have been used excessively and are not as exciting or intriguing as some of the newer books that have been published. By providing students with new leveled bilingual reading books, it would provide opportunities for my students reading abilities to improve. It will challenge them and it will continue to spark a reading interest. Many of my students have the ability to read challenging books such as chapter books and I have some students who also like to read more simplistic books!
