I work at school with a large number of Hispanic children. When teaching students how to read, I am asking them to read in English. However, their first language is ignored during this instruction. Research shows that it is vital to develop BOTH languages, otherwise the child never develops fully in either language. I want bilingual books for the classroom for two reasons. 1) To show students to appreciate their culture, and assist them in reading their native language 2) To help develop students reading strategies in both languages. Having a library of bilingual books will benefit ALL students in the classroom. Not only will it help with reading strategies, it will help students appreciate other cultures. It is important that there are different levels of books, so ALL students can read these books. The more bilingual books we have, the more we show we care about our students' culture AND academics.
