Big Ten Grant for Inner City Art Program

My students need watercolors, tempera cakes, paint brushes, oil pastels, clay, printmaking tools, erasers, colored pencils and much more to support k-6th art making!

My Students

My students come to an underfunded inner-city school and have few supplies to use in our art classroom. Our student population deals with poverty on a daily basis. It's important that my students have exceptional and positive experiences in school. Our school relies heavily on donations and volunteers to make those kinds of experiences a reality!

My students are curious and excited about making art.

This year my students will learn about different cultures, artists and historical periods of art. The art room is a place to discover yourself, take risks and bolster your self-worth. As the one universal language that we all speak, I love bringing art to these very deserving kiddos!

My Project

This project is an application towards the Big Ten Football Championship Educational Initiative. The materials requested will help sustain my kindergarten through sixth grade art classes for three years. Students in my class complete 8 projects a year and 24 projects in total over the course of three years. My program serves over 600 students between the ages of five and twelve.

Without the help of donors and grants, the students in my school will lack the materials needed to give them a rich and inspiring learning environment.

We need watercolors, tempera cakes, paint brushes, oil pastels, clay, printmaking tools, erasers, colored pencils and much more. All of the materials listed with this project will be used to create exciting art making experiences for my students. In my class, we make many global and cultural projects from ancient Egyptian clay King Tuts and colorful oil pastel molas from Panama to "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" lanterns from Japan. We learn about the history and timelines of art through projects like Kindergarten Kandinsky Circle paintings, Modigliani chalk pastel self-portraits and Pablo Picasso Cubist heads. Students learn and investigate modern art, public art, and art with a message, allowing us to talk about current issues and how art plays a role in communicating with the world.
