Big Red Timers to Increase Math Instructional Minutes

Help me give my students 7 giant red timers to help elementary teachers of mathematics ensure equitable instructional minutes for all students.

My Project

I am a math specialist who has the privilege of supporting schools serving elementary students furthest from opportunity. At our school, our team is supporting teachers of mathematics by building and solidifying their math block and one goal is incorporating all components of our math framework. To help increase instructional minutes and thwart off task behaviors, research has proven that using classroom timers is a good focal point for both teachers and students. To add, timers promote equitable distribution of minutes during small group instruction!

This project contains one simple item that will make a world of difference in our math instruction: timers.

Visual timers are used throughout the day to let students and teachers know how much time we have in our small group rotations. Small group rotations? Timers. Time-stamping lesson components? Timers. Much deserved brain break? Timers. Student persevering through a difficult task? Timers!

I love this timer because it is easy to see, it's bright red, and very easy to operate.

It counts down and counts up time. It displays across the room. It also has a volume control.

This timer was life-changing for me as a teacher. It is magnetic and sticks to the whiteboards in the classrooms. It's very easy to use and the sound is adjustable. When it is inactive, it turns off automatically saving the battery. It's large enough for our students to see from anywhere in the room. It counts up to let students know how long they've been working on something or can count down to give students an idea of how much longer they have left to complete tasks thus teaching them time management skills.
