Big Kids Love Picture Books

My students need 7 copies of Wilford Gordon McDonald Partridge and 7 copies of The Empty Lot.

I teach 8th grade language arts to a group of students who's reading levels range from 3rd grade to tenth grade. No matter what their reading level they are just big kids at heart and love a good picture book.

Picture books are a great way to reach students. You are able to connect to them by appealing to the child inside of each of them Reading aloud to the students also fills the gap of being read to that some of our less fortunate students have missed out on.

Both books are great leads into the novels and units that we study. The book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partidge is about a woman who has lost her memories and a little boy who tries to help her find some new ones. I would love to use this to introduce Maya Angloue biographies and the writing of our own memoirs. Many of my students are being raised by grandparents and this book would help them to understand them better. The Empty Lot addresses current environmental concerns in developing areas just like ours. I hope that it will make students think about the world around them as we use a little real life problem solving. Both books introduce sensitive, complicated issues in a non threatening way. I'm sure that even after we read these as a class the students will revisit these titles after they are placed on the library shelf.
