When you walk into my Kindergarten classroom, you experience a buzz of excitement for learning. My students come from low-income families where food is scarce, parents work many shifts and are rarely home, and many people are crammed into small living spaces. My students work hard every day to succeed in reading, math, and writing despite hardships they feel at home.
For students who come from poverty, school offers a safe haven where they know they can reach for their dreams and feel successful.
My classroom is the first place where many students have experiences in reading. Some families have no books at home, which drastically impacts students expose to vocabulary and the structure of books. I want to ensure my students have the best resources to propel their learning to new heights. They can achieve so much with your help!
My Project
Shared reading, where students read with the teacher, is a perfect way to build understanding of how books work and to promote reading fluently. Many students come to school without an understanding that words carry meaning, that each word is a part of a sentence, and that we turn pages one at a time so the story makes sense. Kindergarten is where we focus on building these foundational skills.
Big books allow students to see the words as we read together, make it easier for students to point to words as we read, and encourage students to practice retelling independently.
Every Kindergarten class needs a variety of big books to entice students to engage in reading activities. After reading a book together, students can retell the book in a reading center, pointing to the words, finding a capital letter, and turning pages one at a time. With the Mouse Paint Activity Set, students will have the puppets and colors to reenact the whole story! Advanced students can hunt for sight words, like the, see and I, which is an important skill for independent reading. A set of big books will make a HUGE impact in our classroom!
