Do you learn best by memorizing information? Well, my First Graders certainly don't! They need experiences and stories to help them learn.
I teach first grade at a charter school located in a high poverty, high crime neighborhood in New York City.
More than 85% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. I work with some of the most underprivileged students in the country who also happen to be some of the smartest, most thoughtful and most caring human beings I have ever met. My first graders are curious, motivated and love learning. I am passionate about creating a classroom community where all children have equal opportunities to learn and this means having access to the best learning materials possible.
I am requesting Lakeshore Word Family Big Books. They are a wonderful size - 15" by 19" - which makes them ideal for reading to the whole class. The words are big enough for everyone on the rug to see. Students will also benefit from using the books during Literacy Center time where they work with a partner to reread the story and find sight words and word family words they are learning. The 20 big books I've requested have 8 pages each which is just enough for each student to experience and learn the new phonics skill I am teaching and then go off for independent practice. These books will be especially helpful for my emergent readers who are struggling with phonics skills. The repetition within each story will help students master spelling patterns and build their confidence.
Have you ever told a story to a 6 year old?
Have you seen the way it captivates them? Stories are an essential teaching tool in my classroom. These phonics books will change the way my students learn. Instead of just listening to me talk about a phonics skill, students will get to experience it with a story and then do practice work grounded in the story. It will make for much more meaningful and long lasting learning. Thank you for reading. Please help if you can.
