This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our youngest students are developing early reading and language skills when we use interactive reading strategies. In interactive reading, our children talk with us about the pictures and story. These things are much easier to do with big books that have bold, bright illustrations and repetitive text.
As teachers we can help children develop language skills by engaging them before, during, and/or after reading our books through interactive techniques such as asking them to point to the story title, predict what might happen next, and retell story events.
Teachers help their students become the storyteller by gradually using higher level questions to move the child beyond naming objects in pictures to thinking more about what is happening in the pictures, and how this relates to their own experiences. Again, so much easier to do when you have large pictures in front of you.
Shared book reading is a general practice aimed at enhancing young children’s language and literacy skills and their appreciation of books. It also helps our students' oral language development, listening skills and increase their vocabulary.
