My students need a variety of big books that will provide them with an opportunity to build a strong foundation of letters, sounds, and words, as well as enjoyment in the meaning and language of books.
Our kindergarten students are naturally motivated by social experiences, hands-on and visual activities. Our students are cultural, socially and developmentally diverse.
We have students who are at-risk, homeless, English learners and/or faced with learning difficulties due to unfortunate circumstances.
Each year, we have students who have had limited to no exposure to social or academic opportunities. Our students need a boost of exposure to pique their interest in school and learn how reading can benefit them in many different ways.
My Project
These materials, big books, will help our students get excited about books. Students will have a clear view of the pictures and words on the pages so they are able to interact and share in the reading of the text. Our students will be more engaged to take on the behaviors of readers and learn new concepts about how text works.
Shared reading with big books is a warm, accepting, enjoyable social experience.
Shared reading with big books helps students understand that reading should be expressive and meaningful. It raises awareness of how reading should sound.
It also encourages students to have conversations about what they read which provides social support within a heterogeneous group of readers.
