In addition to recent global tragedies (911, bombings, war in Iraq, Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina) many students start the school year grieving the lost of a parent or significant relative and are in constant despair over neighborhood and domestic violence. Schools, then, must be a place where students are convinced that they are safe and not the only ones dealing with a particular problem. Students must also be taught to have empathy for others. A bibliotherapy reading center will encourage students to select books based on individual preference or need. The use of books to help children and teens heal social, emotional,or personal problems is called bibliotherapy. Literature allows students to identify with characters and problems in books and relate them to their own lives. Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt talks about family issues of abandonment, economic struggles, starvation and family isolation. High quality literature increases students' love of reading for pleasure and helps them to fully understand behaviors of other student's as well as themselves. Dawes School encourages independent reading for the joy of reading. I want my students to read to reduce their emotional or mental pressures and to develop compassion for others. Bibliotherapy helps children look at symbolic meanings and inner workings of a person's mind. Students will be placed in groups according to their particular need to promote discussions and interaction among the various social and emotional issues that students have. Many students, however, will be allowed to select their books from the bibliotherapy reading center. I am currently a Seventh Grade Departmental Language Arts teacher in a Chicago Public Elementary kindergarten through eighth grade School. Five out of thirty students are special education. Many are bilingual. My school is 88% in poverty and will probably be higher this year because of students relocating from Hurricane Katrina. I see approximately 130 students during the school day and am overwhelmed at the courage that many muster each day to get out of bed and come to school. I am asking donors for sets of selected novels to be shared among approximately 130 students. I thank you in advance for any assistance that you are able to provide.
