My Project

As a reading intervention teacher, I get to work with a pretty fantastic group of young people. Some of these students are multilingual learners working toward biliteracy. Some are experiencing a newfound confidence as they begin to view reading as a learned skill- not an in-born trait or byproduct of intelligence. And still, some tell me they don't like reading- and that they probably never will.

For this last group of students especially, I'd like to provide texts that are accessible for developing readers without compromising age-appropriateness or engagement.

Fortunately, more and more publishers are beginning to fill this resource gap, creating high-interest texts at lower readability levels. I would use funds to purchase these "good-fit" texts in addition to specific titles that students have been requesting. Overall, the goal is to facilitate affirming literacy experiences and motivate students as they continue to do the challenging work of acquiring foundational literacy skills after elementary school. Thank you for considering!
