Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a section of Natural Resources and the big topic this year in this course is sustainability. My students are seeking ways the agricultural education program at BHS could be more sustainable while developing products for our local community.

Additionally, my students come from low-income families, but love and enjoy going to school.

Through this project, my students are hoping to find a way to develop and organize a new school-based enterprise and develop their business skills.

My Project

My students are developing a school-based enterprise in our Natural Resources course by using worms. Recently, we were allowed access to our newly built greenhouse; however, we throw away a lot of old and dead plants. By developing a worm farm, we could recycle those dead plants.

Besides using the worms to recycle dead plants, we will also be using the worms to recycle rabbit manure in order to turn it into compost.

Our program has six compost tumblers that we will also utilize to keep our compost fresh. It is our hope that through a composting system we will be able to reduce and recycle organic materials that we would usually dump.

Lastly, my students will develop a business plan for our composting system. The students will determine if we can sell worms and if we could sell compost. The students would then organize how we would do this and would develop "jobs" for students in the Natural Resources class to do. Additionally, students in Animal and Plant Science courses would also be involved.
