Surely, you remember your high school biology class and the textbook that presented concept in a rather uneventful and uninspiring manner. Well, I've got news for you...it has gotten worse! Please help me change my student perception of what science literature can be with new science books.
My biology students are high academic achievers who vary in age from 14 to 18.
They are mostly girls from ethnically diverse backgrounds (White, Jewish, Asian, Black, Latino). Our school is an urban public high school with one of the most rigorous secondary curriculum in the country and was a winner of the 2012 National Merit Award. The primary focus is on preparing these young people for undergraduate studies and future success.
My Project
They say that American high schools fall far behind the rest of the developed world and even behind emerging economies like China, India, and even Nigeria. Science education alone is even further behind. Well, you can make a difference by supporting science teachers who have the courage to explore science in a creative, innovation, and daring way. The most effective science instruction occurs when teachers have the support needed to develop the art-of-teaching. I have a vision for a new biology curriculum that basis teaching and learning on secondary scientific literature, using the textbook purely as a reference for what students are learning. Will you help me build a science literature library from which to build this new approach to teaching science? Will you get involved in the nurturing of America's next generation of innovative scientists?
This project is absolutely important because it has the potential to inspire young minds; to bring science to life and make it real for my students.
English teachers use primary and secondary literature to teach, why not science teachers. Why have science education been confined to outdated textbooks and cookie-cutter lab exercises. We can do better with your help.
