We have begun our extensive unit on the Holocaust, and my students have been absorbing everything they can. The only text that is supplied by our school is the play version of The Diary of Anne Frank. My students won't be happy to stop there. They want to read more about the Holocaust.
My students are amazing, creative, compassionate young people.
They are so excited that we have begun our unit on the Holocaust, and they have already stated that they want to read more than one story. I want to take full advantage of their desire to learn by providing them with additional Holocaust literature so that they can continue to discover this time in history. They are eager to learn, we just need to provide them with the resources.
My Project
We live in a largely rural area, and there is not a great deal of cultural diversity in our community. I cannot change the makeup of our community, but I am committed to helping my wonderful, compassionate students gain a broader perspective of the world through the literature we read together.
"Milkweed" will be used as an optional class novel at then end of the year. Students will be able to select from "Milkweed" or "The Devil's Arithmetic" and will be grouped into book clubs to read and discuss the books.
"Lucky Boy" and "Kindertransport" are non-fiction titles that my students have expressed an interest in reading. The author of "Lucky Boy" went to a local college and was recently in town to speak. The Kindertransport program has fascinated my students and they would like to learn more about the lives of those who participated in the program. "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" is an inspiring collection of art and poetry from children imprisoned in concentration camps.
I truly believe that my students can and will go on to change the world.
They are some of the most compassionate young people I have ever seen. They are so eager to learn about the Holocaust. As a teacher, I know that this unit is one of those times when I can really make an impact on the minds and hearts of my students, so I am asking for you help. They are eager to learn, we just need to provide them with the resources.
