My Project

As a relatively new 5th grade teacher, I have been working hard to bring new titles into my classroom. Previously, I had taught third grade, and as a result, I had mostly third grade books or younger on my shelves. Each year, I chip away slowly and surely to provide quality books that are just right for fifth grade, or are a challenge for those who are ready to try harder books. I firmly believe that if children are to become lifelong readings, they have to first discover a love of reading. To do this, I need a variety of texts that meet my students' interests. I want to provide them choices and to allow them to find topics, genres and authors that inspire and entertain them. To find these books, I always ask at the beginning of the year if my students have any favorites that they recommend for our library and I keep track of titles I hear mentioned so that I can stay informed of what kids are reading and what they are interested in.

These titles and authors, such as the Land of Stores and Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson, are beloved books and have been highly recommended from students who have read them, both from last year and this year.

I find this year, my students love fiction and especially fantasy. They are enthusiastic and love reading, and I want to continue to inspire them. Nothing makes me happier than having them beg for 30 miles of silent choice reading time. This class, particularly, is made up of very interested and engaged readers, and I want to continue to foster that by providing them access to great books that enrich their minds and souls and allow them to escape into new and exciting realms.
