Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
WAS of Performing Arts & Science is located in the Ironbound section of Newark. The students are eager learners who are enthusiastic to express themselves through creative action. For many, the arts are an outlet for emotions and allow for students to shine outside the normal classroom environment.
Almost all of the students have little to no access to theater or the arts outside of school, thereby making the musical theater experience at our school even more valuable.
Many of the students attending our school are English Language Learners with varying levels of English fluency. Further, more than three-quarters of the students have limited resources and come from families who are low-income households.
My Project
WA was a recipient of the Disney Musicals in Schools programs that works to build sustainable theatre programs. Over the course of 17 weeks, professional Teaching Artists will guide our school teachers through the process of putting together a musical with student performers. For many students at our school, our production of Disney's Lion King will be their first exposure to musical theatre. For others, this will be the chance to further grow the skills they've developed in acting, singing, or dancing. No matter what the role, this is an opportunity for students to be a contributing member of a musical theatre production.
Disney will match donations for Disney Musicals in Schools; this means that WA can get up to $1,000 in matching funds from Disney with every dollar we raise!
While Disney Musicals in Schools will provide us with a free performance license to the Lion King, as well as director’s guides and scripts, there are still many more materials we need to make our musical come to life. This fundraising opportunity with Donors Choose will allow our school to double our donations in order to fund items that will support and enhance the experience of producing musical theatre at WAS!
Your donation will go towards items like fabrics, t-shirts and hats for costumes, materials for stage scenery like sheets and paints, plus a few extra things needed to bring a brand new musical theatre program together and putting on full performances for the community with concessions, like popcorn and hotdogs!
