My Students

I teach Title I in a school where our current focus is striving to improve our reading instruction in order to assist students in becoming excellent, well-rounded readers as well as joyful readers.

My kindergarten to grade six students are typically reading two to three levels below grade level.

They are successfully working to learn new reading strategies and improve their reading levels. Students are also exploring their reading personalities by trying a variety of genre, to find their independent reading niche.

My Project

Currently my classroom has only upright seating, a table and chairs along with desks and chairs. Students who come to my room for small group intervention want to do the independent reading portion of their lessons in comfortable seating, similar to what they have available to them in their homerooms.

“Don’t YOU have any comfortable places to sit?”, my students have asked repeatedly.

My student’s homeroom teachers have provided them with a variety of seating choices because they realize that comfortable students are students who are calm, able to focus, and in a position to be productive. I want to provide my students with similar seating options for these same reasons as well as to provide my students with a measure of choice and control over their environment. I also want my students to know that I have been listening to their requests and I am committed to helping them meet all their needs. Knowing that I am committed to helping them will cultivate the on-going growth of relationships in our small groups.
