Currently my classroom has only upright seating, a table and chairs along with desks and chairs. Students who come to my room for small group intervention want to do the independent reading portion of their lessons in comfortable seating, similar to what they have available to them in their homerooms. “Don’t YOU have any comfortable places to sit?”, my students have asked repeatedly. My student’s homeroom teachers have provided them with a variety of seating choices because they realize that comfortable students are students who are calm, able to focus, and in a position to be productive. I want to provide my students with similar seating options for these same reasons as well as to provide my students with a measure of choice and control over their environment. I also want my students to know that I have been listening to their requests and I am committed to helping them meet all their needs. Knowing that I am committed to helping them will cultivate the on-going growth of relationships in our small groups. Your generosity will enable my students to benefit from both small group intervention and flexible seating. It will also help improve group relationships and aid in the continued growth of our sense of community.
