Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year my school started a new reading and writing program and the first unit is called We Are Readers! The unit is really about introducing students to all kinds of books and allowing them to go on "reading adventures". My students love reading and need a variety of books to grow as readers.
My kindergarten students enjoy the new reading and writing program which helps build their confidence as readers.
Many of my students have limited experiences with books and are just now learning how fun reading can be. In my class we go on many "reading adventures" throughout the day. With that being said my students enthusiasm is slowly dwindling due to the limited supply of books we have. Our classroom books barely fill one shelf in our classroom library. So my students are getting bored of reading the same books over and over again. A new library over flowing with books will keep my students engaged and allow them to continue going on "reading adventures".
The Fairmont Neighborhood School is a new elementary school located in the Bronx that unfortunately has very limited resources and funding to supply needed materials. Our students are highly motivated and eager to learn despite the unfortunate circumstances that many of them face daily.
My Project
Our classroom library currently houses only three bins of books that are not developmentally age appropriate. Not to mention badly damaged due to years of handling. My colleague and I have each spent hundreds of dollars on new books for the classroom but unfortunately we do not have the funds to supply our class with the sufficient amount of books needed for the school year. Having a classroom library filled with new books will give my colleague and I the ability to keep exposing our students to new and exciting books and keep them engaged. My plan is to keep the new library books in the classroom for read a loud, shared reading and reading workshop. Since most of our students do not have books at home we will also send students home with them to practice reading for homework. This combined with effective teaching strategies will hopefully help make all my students strong readers and keep them excited about learning through books.
Getting donations for new books will help build a community of 20 knowledgeable and literate students, who in the long run may impact the world in a variety of ways.
Being literate opens up doors and builds a strong foundation for a solid educational career.
