This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 7th grade students in a Title l school, where students have difficulty with access to materials for school and positive school/learning experiences. Many students come from impoverished areas and/or broken homes, where the parents/guardians are just trying to make it.
What I love about my 7th graders, is the way they are constantly changing and growing.
You can see the moment when a 7th grade student begins to show maturity and changing into a young adult. My students may not have the same access to children in more wealthy areas, but they are hungry for education and at the root of it all, really care about themselves, family, community, and school.
My Project
The materials I have chosen are to update and create a positive learning environment for my English Language Arts classroom. Research shows that students who have choice in seating, a chance to move, and are comfortable, are more engaged and willing to learn, which is why I have chosen the various seating choices. A classroom that looks like a relaxing and inviting place with rugs and lighting promotes a positive learning environment. A classroom that is supplied with materials (pens and highlighters) also lessens the anxiety of students who are embarrassed they couldn't afford the basic necessities for school. By donating to my project you are helping my students lessen anxieties, increase engagement, and therefore, be more successful in their reading and writing.
