Betta Fish Help Us Think Betta

Help me give my students these supplies so we can make our individual Aquaponics ecosystem to grow a plant in water that is housing a betta fish and see how the betta fish interact with the plants.

My Students

I have some amazing 6th graders. Our elementary is a suburban school with a mixed demographic. Approximately 25% of students come from a low-income family. Many students live in apartments, or in single parent homes and blended families. Several students in the sixth grade alone, have a parent in prison, a deceased parent, a deceased classmate, and there are a handful of students that have accommodations through SpEd. Despite all their challenges, they are all very excited to be at school and have shown resilience and ability to continue learning.

My 6th graders are deserving of so many opportunities to learn, along with have many resources, strategies and figurative tools for learning as I can give them to help prepare them for junior high.

I want to teach my students that it is important to learn who they are, how to use social emotional skills, how to use their resources around them, and work together.

My only hope is that I can impact each student in some way. Whether it is through giving them a safe place, feeling heard, or helping them see their own growth over the year I have with them.

My Project

We found in previous years that having the fish on students' desks actually helped them to focus more as we are reviewing for end of year testing in all our classes for the week and a half that they have them at school. They are going to be more inclined to pay attention to the lessons because they will have something to take a look at every once and a while that can help relax them. It is such a great memory for students and it is one of the main things they look forward to all year.

Not only will they be learning about ecosystems through this exciting experience, they will also be able to have something to help them with mindfulness, and teach them responsibility.

This activity is going to help us make learning about ecosystems so engaging and hands-on here at school. All these supplies go into setting up the system before the fish come and maintaining their ecosystem. We will take 6 school days to make observations of our betta fish interacting with the fast growing plants we have floating on top.

After a couple days, students plants will have a great root system reaching into the water so they can observe how their fish acts with the roots. A little over a week later, the plants are mature and will start to wilt. It is at this point that students will be able to take their fish home or find another home that wants their fish. Students will have to submit their findings and observations for this project.
