Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher of multiple subjects in Brooklyn New York. I teach 31 of the city's most enthusistic students. In the early part of this year my class received compliments from our literacy coach, principal and other students in school because wherever they went they toted a book in hand, even in the cafeteria! These boys and girls truly have a passionate love for reading. But the problem is, to continue nurturing this passion we need books to keep up the momentum. Our classroom library has been exhausted. How can we create life long readers without the proper materials--BOOKS!! My students have been asking me constantly when we will be receiving new books to read. Some students have taking it upon themselves to point out publishers dates in the 1970's; the "olden days" as they call it. To be honest, my school has not replenished my library in three years with new titles and many titles that I have are used. Recently, we went on a class trip to Barnes and Noble to get kids even more excited about reading and to expose them to different genres. They were pointing out different books of interest with excitment beyond what words could replicate. I would like to see them with these books in hand. Books that they can't put down, books that they want to recommend to their peers. The culminating activity will be a book review of their favorite title that will be placed around school and in the library. Some will be chosen to read aloud to the first and second grades. I have a student teacher who has volunteered to laminate and enlarge some of the best reviews. We hope that you will take our proposal into consideration. You won't regret it!!!
