Best Books Make Eager Readers: Middle School Library Funding

My students need great reads to choose from. As a charter school with no "library" teaching literature in workshop style requires lexiled books for students to choose.

My Students

Self-selecting quality literature is they key to building strong reading stamina and valuable skills needed for success in all areas of education. Learning about world and yourself as a middle school reader through books is a powerful experience.

My students are 7th and 8th graders who do not have the advantage of a school library or librarian.

We learn through a hands on approach in our curriculum based on Aristotle's motto - "We learn by doing." In learning to read well and to enhance other core subjects like social studies or science, students are required to read a variety of genres throughout the year and we rely heavily on donations, parent purchases, or the limited resources we already have on head.

My Project

Contemporary, compelling literature about the world is essential for middle school readers. With a full classroom library of books specifically chosen to enhance other core areas such as social studies and science, students will be able to learn and enjoy reading with a variety of choices and ease of access within the classroom library. Having the best fiction and nonfiction texts readily available to share and use will be an important component in continuing to develop our middle school literacy program.

This project is my passion - being able to expose children to the best literature and matching a student with the perfect book that they can really connect to and learn from.

It is inspiring for both teacher and students and can be truly life-changing, especially for reluctant readers. As they continue to be drawn to reading and realize the value and importance of a good book, they will develop strong literacy skills that will benefit them for the rest of their academic career.
