Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is like grandma's house to many of our kids. We are the auntie they love and the nana who cares. We read to them, sew their clothes, give them advice and when they're upset, we listen. At our middle and high school, most of our kids come from the inner city and most are minorities. All of them are students with disabilities and all of them get free lunch.
Our kids are hungry, so we built a garden to enhance their diets.
We want to find ways to preserve the fruits and vegetables so we can reach all of our kids and so they don't go to waste. Dehydrating or preserving the huge batch of strawberries we expect to grow this June would be one way to reach more kids. Taking the leftover apples from lunch and making apple sauce or dehydrated apples would also enrich our home economics and life skills classes. Picking the vegetables and using the crock pot to make "stone soup" would benefit everyone.
My students love the garden. This year we made salads, fresh salsa, tacos and ate tomatoes and peppers straight off the vine. We sat and listened to music and were a community. Next spring, with your help, will be even better.
