I work in a Life Skills program that serves students with severe disabilities at the high school level. I also have students in general education that serve as peer helpers in my class. We focus on our students' abilities instead of their disability.
Our main goal is teaching our students to be as independent as they can be.
My class will need someone to help them with daily living skills and completing most tasks with various levels of prompting for the rest of their lives. It is important that we teach them to be flexible, use appropriate social skills, and persevere to do their best.
The games on my wishlist will help support with social skills as well as academic skills such as number, letter and number recognition. My students are nonverbal but they still practice communication skills using augmentative alternative communication strategies. Taking turns, following the rules and being part of a group are all important skills for my students to learn and practice. Some of my students have difficulty manipulating and holding playing cards and would benefit from card holders. My list also includes sensory stimulation materials like the fidget toys and sensory oral motor chewelry necklaces. The use of fidget toys helps my students with concentration and attention to tasks.
My students can benefit from having new board games to learn important social skills such as communication, sharing, waiting, taking turns and enjoying interaction with others.
The games I would like for my classroom would be engaging for my students and also at a level that they would understand. They can practice matching by playing Zingo and pattern recognition by playing Dominoes. By playing games, it makes learning more fun and meaningful.
