Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a fifth grade teacher in a large elementary school in Staten Island, N.Y. Our school follows the balanced literacy model which promotes students working in small groups. One specific thing that we teach in the upper grades is literature circles. The entire class breaks up into groups of about 5 or 6 students, collectively reads a book, and completes a task. Each group member has a role such as manager, leader, timer, passage selector, and vocabulary wizard. I am asking for the "yacker tracker" to help keep the students voice levels down so that all groups can work and focus on their individual tasks. The "yacker tracker" gives students a visual warning by going from green to yellow, letting the students know their voice levels are rising. This gives students the ability to control the classroom volume without interrupting other groups and taking the teacher away from the group that he/she is working in.
Along with the yacker tracker, I am also requesting the time tracker. This will be used during literature circles as well to help the students keep track of how long they have been working and how long they have left. The time tracker can also be used for test preparation. All standardized tests are timed exams. Using the time tracker in class will help students get used to pacing themselves without verbal reminders. Hopefully applying this skill during standardized exams will allow students to use their time wisely and help the students to finish on time.
