My students need basic classroom materials; crayons, markers, books, and classroom supplies to create beginning of the year and getting to know each other literacy projects.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are AMAZING! Most of the children in our class come from poverty and underprivileged homes. Some of the students have limited social, emotional, and academic skills, and quite a few of them have never experienced school at all! They are amazing because despite the challenges they have at home, they grow and blossom into wonderful readers and writers in first grade through exciting and fun learning experiences.
Early on the children begin to show a love learning and understand the importance of a good education!
"Knowledge is power that no one can take away from you," is one of our mottos.
Children deserve a safe, fun place to learn! Incorporating mindfulness and yoga also encourages a community of learners where children feel responsible for their learning, respectful of others and are encouraged to do their BEST!
Among the children their levels vary from not recognizing the alphabet to recognizing sight words. Through read alouds, centers, and daily practices in the beginning of the year, we get to know each other, establish routines and have positive interactions that support a community of learners with high expectations.
My Project
Our days begin with a morning meeting where children learn to speak and listen to one another. They share good qualities about themselves and acknowledge others good deeds in the classroom.
The Wayne Dyer books on the list are books that inspire our children and help students share and recognize positive character traits.
Morning meeting is also our time we practice mindfulness and will use the Mindfulness For Kids book to help guide us through our practice. We write sentences daily, share writings and illustrations through our Author of the Day and will use the exciting Dr. Jean book to inspire our children's creative writing.
Erasers wear down quickly so we are in need of them while we write! We read quality literature every day and do a monthly author study. In literacy centers, children work independently and help each other learn through.
The Learning Journey Match It! Mathematics, Counting, and Alphabet puzzles will help develop letter and word recognition.
The puzzles and games will encourage working together in centers and practice a variety of literacy skills.
The Crayola crayons and watercolors, Expo markers, scissors, and Elmer's glue sticks help all students have the things they need to be successful and create colorful stories! They will be used in centers and individually throughout the year!
Having the basic supplies makes their challenging lives a little easier! All the supplies will help our students reach their potential and build self-esteem by having the materials necessary to complete their work! It is going to be a fantastic year in first grade! My students come from tough places and deserve to have the basics...many come to school without pencils and crayons.
THANK YOU for making positive difference for CHILDREN who are so worth it!
