My Students

Our students are children from immigrant families from various countries. The languages spoken are Chinese, Mandarin, Tigrynia, Spanish, Arabic, Amharic, Soninke, and Somali. They all have special needs and have a vast range of abilities, strengths and needs. Many of our students are non-verbal and some are on the autism spectrum.

Our classroom is vibrant, engaging, and energizing.

A great deal of learning occurs through embedded play, where the environment is carefully planned to maximize exposure to new materials and opportunities for exploration. The children enter our classroom each day with enthusiasm, eager to explore new opportunities and play with friends.

My Project

This projects consists of giving our students a fresh start for the beginning of the year. Many materials we use are non-reusable and this allows children to take home finished products with assorted materials so they can take pride in their work. Things like markers and crayons get used to the bitter end, until there is nothing left.

Our children have a vast array of abilities, some just learning to make marks on paper and others using drawing and writing to lay foundational skills needed for literacy and written expression.

Starting off the year with fresh materials allows us to teach our students how to take care of our materials, by using them with care for example teaching them to put caps on markers so they do not dry out.
