I have always believed that reading anything is better than reading nothing at all. A good book will take you on an adventure of a lifetime. I am a first grade teacher at Solomon School. This is my fourth year teaching. I have struggled to buy books for my classroom with my own funds and I am thrilled to be the recipient of the Rochelle Lee Fund which will help me fill my classroom with adventures for my students. Most of the students entering my classroom do not know how to read yet. I work very hard throughout the year to teach them to read and to love reading. I use myself as an example daily. I tell my students I don't care what I'm reading; it could be the back of a cereal box or a carton of orange juice, as long as I'm comfortable and reading. I would like to create an inviting area for my students to develop the same love for reading and books as I do. I am hoping to receive items that will create this inviting area. Having small child-height sofas, beanbag chairs, colorful bookshelves, and book baskets will create a soft, yet welcoming space for the students to kick off their shoes, grab a book, snuggle in and read. My students would benefit from these items because they will be able to connect reading with something that is comfortable, warm, inviting and fun. They will have a place they can call their own whether they are sitting there looking through the pictures of a book or attempting to sound out those hard words. It's hard learning to read, but having an inviting space may encourage them to try, try and try.
