Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the end of the year I expect my students to reach two goals: to grow at least 1.5 years in their reading level and to be reading at or above grade level. Without a leveled library of high quality texts for beginning readers and a fluency center, it will be challenging to accomplish these goals
This year I am teaching 2nd grade at a high performing Title I charter school in Philadelphia.
My school has been grades 6-12 for many years. This year they are founding their elementary grades with K-2. At this point there is not enough funding for the new classrooms to have leveled libraries. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students are amazing. They have a passion for learning that is largely untapped. Based on my eight years of experience, what I know that my students will work hard and rise to the high expectations that I hold for them. What they lack in skill and background knowledge when they start the year can be taught and the gaps can be filled. My students have the ability to achieve at high levels when given the right tools and high quality, systematic, and data driven instruction. These resources will help me to do this not only this year, but also for years to come.
My Project
I will use these beginning reader leveled books and listening center resources (like headphones) to help my second graders reach our ambitious goal of growing at least 1.5 grade levels and becoming third grade readers. I will use the contact paper to cover the books to ensure that they last for a long time and impact as many students as possible.
One of the most important things that you learn in life is how to read.
The donations to this project will make a direct impact on the trajectory of the lives of my students, especially those who come in reading below grade level. A leveled library and a listening center are essentials parts of my classroom and the method in which I teach kids how to read. When I moved schools I was unable to bring those resources with me. Please help me to build an incredible leveled library for my students!
