This year I will be teaching 2nd grade at a high performing Title I charter school in Philadelphia. My school has been grades 6-12 for many years. This year they are founding their elementary grades with K-2. At this point there is not enough funding for the new classrooms to have leveled libraries. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I haven't met them yet, but I have been a teacher in an urban setting for the past eight years. Based on this experience, what I do know about my students is that they will work hard and rise to the high expectations that I hold for them. What they lack in skill and background knowledge when they start the year can be taught and the gaps can be filled. My students have the ability to achieve at high levels when given the right tools and high quality, systematic, and data driven instruction.
