Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My new class of first graders, which includes newcomers, will be setting their reading goals in the fall. Once we finish assessing, we discuss the importance of goal setting and the fun feeling of accomplishment once the goal is met. Therefore, I guide each child to set their own goals based on their most current reading level.
We set goals for reading words in isolation, segmenting the sounds in words, reading sight words, and reading words in connected text.
At the end of our first eight-week cycle, I would love to reward them with some fun incentives, such as superhero pencils, bracelets, stamps, medals for meeting their goals; and a trophy, for those mastering all first-grade sight words. What a fun way to reward my little ones for their hard work! We will also start off the year with a First-Grade Bootcamp which will be used to reinforce how to properly use our classroom materials such as glue bottles, glue sticks, and our classwork folders.
