Beginning Betta

Help me give my students an aquaponic fish tank and hydroponic garden for our betta.

My Project

We need a home for our classroom betta fish! We study the food chain and ecosystems in fifth grade, so what better way than to experience first hand with a class pet. The aquaponics system will be a great aquarium environment for our betta fish. The waste she creates will act as fertilizer for the hydroponic garden on top. My students will have the experience of watching how one organism helps another organism survive and be able to make connections from that experience to our science curriculum.

Having a class pet to care for will also instill responsibility and empathy.

One of my students will have the responsibility to feed our betta every day as one of our rotating jobs. We'll need the food and weekend pellets to keep her healthy and fed throughout the year.
