Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills.

This engaging non-fiction science text will help students learn about Mt.

St. Helens (our local volcano) and practice using headings, context clues, and critical thinking to be volcano detectives.

My 4th-grade students study volcanoes and the changing Earth in science and they are studying Washington state history in social studies. Since we are a state full of volcanoes including Mt. St. Helens, this will be the perfect book to study together. 4th grade is widely accepted as the year students make the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" and to make this transition, students need support in how to ready non-fiction books differently. This book is perfect practice because it is full of supportive illustrations, text at their level, and a sprinkling of humor.

The magnifying glasses requested as part of this project will enhance the "detective experience" for this project and will be used for STEM activities with my 1st-5th grade enrichment groups.

In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students participate in the free lunch.
