Our school is a Title l and high poverty school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many go from school to daycare and get home in time to go to bed. Then, get up the next morning and do it all over again. Their caregivers have to work long hours and are not able to give a lot educational support to their children.
Despite the many challenges my third graders face daily, we strive to provide quality education and exposure through extracurricular activities to help them become well-rounded individuals that are productive young citizens of society.
I partner teach a general education classroom where I teach math, science and social studies to two classes. When teaching these students several components are taken into consideration such as learning style, and technology and fluency activities are effective tools to cater to their personal needs.
Third grade math is compiled of many new concepts for students and can be a shock and struggle for many. The more hands-on resources my students have available to them, the better their understanding of any new math concept they may be learning or reviewing. I want my classroom to be a student-led classroom, where I am more of a resource to the students than a lecturer.
Students enjoy and stay engaged when they are working hands-on with math resources; by staying engaged they are learning and understanding the math concept being taught.
The VersaTiles are a teaching resource that are fun, engaging, and an amazing tool to reinforce new math concepts being taught. Then having small group, differentiation instruction time, the VersaTiles are perfect for the students to use on their own. These would prove to be a most valuable tool to my students.
