Becoming Scientists With Expository Texts!

My students need these 43 science texts on insects, plants, life-cycles, and more, to help them engage with their curriculum and learn to love reading as much as they love science!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kids love science. They are fascinated by the world around them and have a desire to learn more. But, they do not have access to the texts that they need to help them to develop and pursue their natural curiosity. These books will truly empower and push my kids in their pursuit of knowledge.

My kids are absolutely brilliant.

They are so engaged with and curious about the natural world, which translates into a deep love of science. As a writing and science teacher, it is so heartwarming to see every hand in the air during our science lessons. Unfortunately though, when my kids are fascinated by a specific topic, they do not have the resources to continue their research on their own outside of class. We do not have a library in my school and I do not have the resources to provide my kids with all of the books that they could possibly devour, although I wish that I did. Additionally, my kids are growing up in a low income community where there is little access to educational resources. Although our school is a loving place where kids absolutely feel safe and part of a secure and caring community, this absence of a library leaves a deep gap in their educational trajectories.

My Project

As mentioned, my kids do not have a library nor do they have access to educational resources outside of the classroom. The combination of these two factors leads my kids to feel frustrated and, more saddening, could potentially lead them to lose interest in reading and their education altogether. As their teacher, I cannot let this happen. My job is to work relentlessly to make sure that they have access to the materials that they need to satisfy their intellectual curiosity. These books will ignite within my students a deep desire to continue learning and pursue a rigorous academic trajectory. There is no limit to what students can do when the have access to the resources that they need to truly take control over their own education and feel empowered to learn more. These books will show my kids the linkages between their education, their desire to learn and the power of reading and books- and that critical linkage will extend to all areas of their life.

Words cannot express what it would mean to both my students and me to have these books in our classroom.

My kids closely monitor our bookshelves to see when I have added new texts. I so often sit and imagine the expressions that they would have on their faces if they saw a whole new bookshelf full of expository texts. Having these resources in our classroom would truly invigorate my students and help to cultivate a lifelong passion for learning, reading and for the world around them.
