My students need supplies for our class pets to practice responsibility and team work, foster empathy and caring, and learn the basic needs of living creatures.

My Students

I teach in a low-income, very small city surrounded by Detroit, where students' needs extend beyond learning to read. In addition to feeding hungry bellies breakfast, lunch, and snack, we feed them love, acceptance, social skills, and a hands-on, student-led education!

I have the best students!

My school and class are very diverse, containing mostly Bengali, Caucasian, African-American, Polish, Bosnian, and Yemeni children; many of whom do not speak English at home. They are hard workers though, creative, loving, and enthusiastic!

My Project

We use guinea pig class pets in our classroom to practice caring for others, empathy, teamwork, and responsibility.

Our guinea pigs are our friends, and they serve us as therapy pets and reading buddies.

Some of us have a hard time making friends, and connecting with animals gives us those enriching relationships. Some of us are embarrassed of our language or reading skills, and talking to animals and reading with them removes the barrier. Some of us have a hard time sitting still...until a guinea pig sits in our lap.

Class pets have been supported by studies in their benefits, and we love our class pets! We need help providing our pets with their annual supplies such as food, bedding and hay. Mrs. K covers summer costs, but we need help covering the winter and spring, please!
