Becoming Resilient Through Art and Community

My Students

This year I moved to first grade after teaching twenty years in kindergarten. There are a lot of first things about this year. First year in class all day. First year eating lunch at school. And for some of my students, first time actually attending school in person.

We love to have new learning adventures every day.

My first grade students are learning new, groundbreaking things in math and literacy. I am especially excited to watch their growth in phonics, writing, and math. One thing we really need to work on is building personal resilience.

My Project

This pandemic has helped me to understand that my students need direct instruction on how to be resilient. We can learn social and emotional skills through creating art, building a caring classroom community, and learning appropriate classroom behaviors.

Art is one way to promote resilience and support positive emotional learning.

We can make mistakes in our art and learn how to fix them. My students will be able to create amazing art with the new art supplies.

A new carpet will replace a worn carpet that is 20 years old. This is a place we can gather to read, learn and create a safe classroom community.

My students need to have the motivation to demonstrate appropriate behavior. They also need to participate in class, follow my rules and complete their work. I would like to try having them earn desk pets. This will be a way I can reward positive behavior.
