Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills.

This engaging non-fiction science text will help students understand the process that real scientists use to make discoveries and refine their theories.

My 5th graders study astronomy and planets as one of their major science topics. When they come to me for reading enrichment time, I like to connect their reading to what they are learning about in science or social studies.

Every child has heard of Pluto, but they usually understand why it is no longer considered a planet. The story Mike Brown and how his love for Pluto and search for similar planets led to a change in our understanding of the Kuiper Belt definition of a planet is a high-interest topic to help students understand the sometimes confusing pace of real scientific research.

In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students participate in the free lunch.
