Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a school that is classified as low-income, high-risk, low-performing, and a high population of English Language Learners. Within my self-contained classroom, I have the pleasure of working with 3, 4, and 5 year old students with disabilities. In case you were not familiar with a self-contained classroom, this means my students spend their entire school day separated from all other students within our school.
During our school day, my students spend their time learning things from basic self-care (i.e.
hand washing, utilizing the bathroom, etc.), how to walk on line, utilizing their fingers properly to write their names, and in most cases learn how to communicate with others, as some of my students are non-verbal. Even with these challenges, based on their smiles, my students enjoy coming to school. The goal of my project is to keep my students love of coming to school alive by exposing them to things within my classroom that are both educational and exciting. To do this not we are in need of unique classroom supplies. Having the tools necessary to keep my student’s imaginations and abilities alive is my goal for this project.
My Project
I am requesting these items to aid my students in learning how to do things that most of us take for granted: the basic ability to pour a cup of juice, open up a package, and feed ourselves a snack.
The child size pitchers and snack items will give my students the opportunity to learn how to serve and feed themselves independently.
This is an activity we all had to learn growing up, however my students need a little more practice to become proficient at it.
Though my students may only be 3, 4, or 5 years old, this is the time for them to learn these basic skills. Then as they grow older, my students are one step closer to being able to lead a completely independent life.
