This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves students in grades TK-8 span. We are from the inner city public school and our students are mostly English language learners. Our school's mission focuses on global ecology with an emphasis on critical thinking and 21st century skills.
My first graders are a bunch of curious and inquisitive first learners who enjoy working collaboratively as teams.
They are self-motivated young individuals who are full of curiosity and energy to explore and learn math, science, read, and listen to stories every day. Because most of my students don't have access to computer with internet at home, let alone having access to printers, they rely on me to provide access of internet at school and print hard copies of projects to share both in class and at home.
My Project
I envision my students to become savvy in financial literacy if given the opportunity to be engaged and explored in financial literacy projects with sufficient functioning technology.
Keeping focused with the alignment our first unit of study in social studies and language arts, "Why Do People Get Involved in Their Community," we have read many stories about people who helped the community and made the community better.
I would pose a question to my students and ask them to think about what they can do to contribute to their community. First we would take a community walk to survey our community. The iPad will allow us to video tape the surrounding neighborhood as well as taking pictures to share back in class.
The financial literacy lessons will tie to collecting recyclable items and earning money for a good cause. Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 to bring recycled items such as soda cans and plastic bottles to class. The class will collect these recyclable items for 4 weeks. Each group will count and keep tracks of their groups' items in form of pictographs and tally marks in their math journal.
To deepen students' understanding of recycling and saving, we will take a trip to the recycling center to sell the cans and bottles that the students that have brought to class. My students will make a plan as to how they will save or donate the money they have raised from the recycling sales. Students get to vote on what they can do with their raised fund. They can donate the entire amount or divide the amount to the locate animal shelter or to charities such as the Red Cross or Children's Hospital.
The color toner will enable me to print out pictures from the iPad.
