Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. We are a traditional high school in an urban district, and the school has recently left turn-around status. Over 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and we don't quite have the money for new textbooks. Through Geography my students are challenged to push their thinking about their world and the world around us in order to become critical, excited learners.

My Project

Currently our textbooks are old editions with maps from ten years ago. The world has changed a lot in the past decade and my students are excited to analyze and understand these geographical changes. New atlases will give the students the opportunity to expand their world view and intentionally study different themes, trends and data points.

Students can explore colorful, current maps to analyze root causes and effects of spatial trends or investigate how the flows of goods, people and ideas impact the world.

As they explore the world my students find causes and ideas to inspire their life, career choices and changes they want to enact. It will allow student to create background knowledge to support them as they move through and attempt to understand life.
