My Students

My incoming second graders are on the verge of becoming fearless, strong and voracious readers. Most of them have conquered the decoding and are reading at or above grade level. Experts at reading words, they need practice to know that reading is understanding and a door to learning.

Our school's students come from a diverse neighborhood and multiple family situations.

Some have experienced a wide array of living situations and have moved from one family situation to another. They can be very emotional at times but like brothers and sisters they care and watch out for one another. Working with them last year I have seen their development in how to encourage and facilitate the learning of each other and grow themselves as they do it.

As they start this new year together I want them to have a wide range of new and rigorous reading choices that lead them to support one another in their reading growth.

My Project

Most of my incoming second graders have learned to decode books at grade level and beyond. I want to provide series books to deepen their comprehension.

These students are communicators who learn best by meeting, talking and working together.

During readers' workshop time they are taught new skills for understanding what is read and working with text. One of the most powerful structures is book clubs. My students thrived when I gave them guided independence in their club. They assess their strengths and decide what strategies they want to work on. Once they were in their self-chosen group they chose their books to study and daily focus of the work. By giving them opportunities to look at books by the same author or written in the same format, they can stretch into longer chapter books yet have familiar structures for support. Having the same types of books makes it easier for them to choose a focus that is common to all and strengthens their work and growth. They are in heterogeneous groups so lower readers can be supported in reading a harder book by those stronger readers and when they move on to another in the series the familiar format and vocabulary decreases some of the cognitive load.

I know that seeing series of books completely new and different will generate and build on the excitement of a new year and grade. By offering these learners great literature they can hold in their hand you will open the door to the adventures of reading and it teaches us all about the world around us. This project will enhance their spirit of learning together and supporting each other as a class family.
