Help me give my students materials to support phonics and high frequency word knowledge, and quality children's books to develop reading comprehension!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Eager to learn, grow, and be part of a the learning community is how I describe my students! As a reading teacher, I work with second language learners to help them learn to read in English. My students jump up when I enter the room to bring them to my reading classroom! They love coming for our small group sessions. They participate and make connections to what they are learning in their homerooms.
Learning to read in a second language can be difficult but my students will be successful!
My Project
My project will bring fun and engaging phonics activities to students who are learning to read at various levels. Students can use these phonics games and picture cards to not only learn how to read new words but also learn the word meaning. As English language learners, they will benefit from additional support to build their vocabulary for reading and speaking. All of my students need daily practice with reading so that they can develop their phonics and comprehension skills. Putting books in their hands and providing a quiet place to read to and with an adult (me!) will allow them the practice and motivation to progress.
I have chosen beautiful children's books that connect to the science and social studies themes they are studying in their homerooms.
This will help them develop background knowledge so they can be more successful readers and participants in their homeroom classes, too!
