Because Teenagers Forget Stuff but Literacy Still Matters

Help me give my students an organized literacy center for their writing folders and notebooks. The sturdy cart will easily store the crates that hold all the time, effort, and heart contained in their notebooks and zipper files.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teenagers get a bad rap. They are kind and funny and clever and insightful and fun. Sure, they can be obnoxious, but that's because they're human. Which isn't their fault. I wish I could hand all of my students a happy and successful future, but that's not how it works. All I can do is guide them in developing the tools that will help them achieve it themselves. Literacy rates have been steadily falling since I started teaching, but COVID made things so much worse. Clear reading and writing instruction, models, and practice are crucial if my students are to have the opportunities they deserve.

I am very intentional in my teaching: everything we do in class sets up what is coming next.

Thus, a student's writing folder is an essential resource. It is their reference when they begin a new writing task. It's also a time capsule showing where they started and how far they've come.

After spending part of the summer studying Reading for Understanding and 180 Days, I've realized I need to give students some time for their own reading and writing. We'll be using the notebooks for their creative/reflective writing and to track their reading journeys.

Everyone talks about "teaching responsibility" and I understand where they're coming from. But kids are human (again, not their fault) and all humans have bad days. Even the most organized and diligent students have mishaps with their backpacks/supplies: lost, stolen, forgotten at dad's house. It's hard enough being a teenager. I'd like to make sure they have everything they need--no matter what kind of day their having. And I like the reminder each day as students walk in and see the cart at the front of the room: my literacy, my work, my thoughts...matter. I matter. Because they do.
