This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many English learners, particularly at the secondary level, are rarely exposed to books at their level yet that pique their interests and apply to the life of a teenager and beyond. I believe that Because of Winn Dixie is that book. Since being written in 2000, Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is a timeless children's story about a young girl named Opal who moves to a new town and meets a new furry friend, Winn Dixie, in a grocery store. This book touches on themes like loss, non-judgement, loneliness and non-judgement which are as pertinent to high-schoolers as they are to elementary-age students.

The decision to teach because of Winn Dixie came from a strong connection to the story as a child and the simplicity of the text itself, which is essential for English learners.

Kate DiCamillo writes a story that uses everyday-language and robust descriptions that are accessible for pre-emergent students making the text both satisfying and approachable. Finding texts at this level and length can be challenging, but my students deserve a compelling story that will enrich their language and lives.

My students also deserve the satisfaction of reading from a physical book that will benefit future generations of students for years to come. Reading from a printed PDF or sharing one single class copy don't compare to the experience of reading from a physical book at which students will be able to marvel at their progress. By funding this project, we can ensure my students will get to enjoy reading a class book as a way to culminate the end of the school year.
