This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can we teach children to be successful in life if they don’t have the necessary materials to learn in school? I am teaching 3 classes of 7th grade English and one class of 7th grade ELA AIS. I have 90 children who come from all different parts of the world, from Arkansas to Tibet. These children are coming to school every day with their own unique stories and it is my goal to give them the skills they need in order to share their stories and thrive in the real world.

The students in my classroom are students with beautiful minds- but they need to feel inspired and motivated!

Many of these children are coming from homes where English is not their first language. They are also coming with a range of disabilities- including intellectual and specific learning disabilities and emotional disturbances. Some of my children are repeating 7th grade. Most of my students are reading somewhere between a 3rd grade and 5th grade level.

My Project

I have children who are hesitant to read and have a difficult time choosing appropriate books. My classroom library is pretty empty and I'm lacking titles that inspire my children to want to read.

My students have negative memories when it comes to reading, and cannot remember a positive literacy interaction.

They tell me that they hate reading and it breaks my heart as a book lover and a teacher!

My goal is to get my children to love (or like!) books and reading. My children need quality literature that fits their interests in order to hook them and entice them to read.

The children will be participating in book clubs during their English class. They get to choose their own books and groups based on their common interests. It sounds great in theory- but there is no money in the budget for the books! I am hopeful that the addition of these books to our classroom library will get the children more excited about reading!
