My Students
The students in my first grade class are interested in science, LEGOs, making friends, art and cats. They want to succeed even though there are many forces in this country which fight against their efforts. They speak Spanish, Amharic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Tagalog, and English.
My students are inquisitive, hilarious, honest, and ambitious people.
Two out of three students is living in poverty and yet every single student has so much drive to learn. Our dual language program supports native Spanish-speakers along with those with a desire to learn Spanish. With a wonderful diversity of interests and challenges, our school works hard to know each student's name and need.
My Project
We are very fortunate to have many books in our classroom. Unfortunately, many of those books have been well-loved and are falling apart. The section of our bookshelf that is especially empty is the one reserved for beginning readers. It can be difficult to motivate early readers, especially when they are struggling. It is even more difficult when the proper books are either not available or too frail to handle.
This project will show my students that every ability level is valued.
Level C books introduce dialogue and diverse punctuation. Readers at this level begin to use some expression when reading. Level D books feature simple contractions and some sentences with more than six words. All of these students deserve high-quality books which will support them where they are and help them get to where they want to be.
