I teach a diverse community of learners in K-6 Music. The students are very motivated and fun loving in the classroom music environment. I encourage all styles of song, dance, storytelling, acting, and playing instruments on a daily basis. The students often request to repeat activities and I am always on the lookout for activities that will motivate them towards musical success! A typical day with my students involves joy, success, and love of music. I motivate my students, by making something that could be considered challenging fun!
Learning music in a fun environment!
My Project
Reading out loud and storytelling are a daily part of my primary music class lessons. I present books that illustrate songs beautifully, teach about musical concepts, instruments, and styles, and that are fun to dramatize through acting with music. This part of the lesson is enjoyed greatly by the primary students, often sparking their interests and helping them make deeper connections to their own lives and understandings of music.
Music pairs very well with stories like the Teddy Bear's Picnic, where the book illustrates the lyrics to the song.
Stories like Firebird, illustrate the beauty and difficulty of ballet, through the music of Stravinsky and the story of a young aspiring ballerina who builds her confidence and dedication to ballet through her friendship with the principle ballerina.
